The Columbia Law Review is proud to be hosting our 2024 Symposium on the Law of Protest. Protests have long been a part of the fabric of American politics and society, but the past fifteen years have witnessed a surge in protest activity not seen since the 1960s and early 1970s. Columbia University, specifically, has a long tradition of protests, with students using their voices to take on global issues such as the Vietnam War, South African Apartheid, and climate change. Of course, Columbia protests have recently been in the news once again, raising important questions about how protests can be effective, when they cross lines, and how they can or should be regulated.

It is within this context that CLR is planning a Symposium on the Law of Protest, an event that will be both timely and timeless. We hope that this conference can serve as a much-needed academic and legal response to the questions that have been raised by events on Columbia’s campus and across the country. As student scholars and future lawyers, we feel the best way we can positively contribute to the current dialogue is to engage with and critically examine the current legal and political frameworks that shape protest activity, reflecting on how they have developed and imagining ways they might change. We hope that scholars and practitioners from across the political spectrum will join us.
